Armie Hammer breaks two years of silence after sexual assault allegations

American actor Armie Hammer has revealed that he was sexually assaulted as a teenager and contemplated suicide following allegations against him.

The 36-year-old’s career has been in freefall since the rise of a series of damaging allegations over explicit messages he allegedly sent on social media and an allegation of rape by a woman in Los Angeles in March 2021.

Hammer, who vehemently denies all allegations and entered rehab for drug and alcohol abuse in May 2021, claimed he would not undo the past two years.

In his first interview since the allegations, he told the Air Mail digital newsletter: “I am now thankful for everything that has happened to me. I am now a healthier, happier and more balanced person. I can be there for my kids in a way I never was.

“I am really grateful for my life and my recovery and everything. I wouldn’t go back and undo everything that happened to me.”

The Call Me By Your Name actor later said: “I had a very intense and extreme lifestyle.

“I picked up these women, brought them in, in this whirlwind of travel and sex and drugs and big emotions flying around, and as soon as I was done I just dropped them off and moved on to the next woman, making that woman feel feel abandoned or used.

“I’m here to admit my mistakes, take responsibility for being an asshole, for being selfish, for using people to make me feel better, and when I was done, I moved on. And treated people worse than they should have been treated.”

During the interview, Hammer claimed his interest in BDSM stemmed from being sexually abused as a 13-year-old by a youth pastor over a period of nearly a year.

“What that did for me was it introduced sexuality into my life in a way that I had absolutely no control over it,” he said.

“I was powerless in the situation. I had no instance in the situation. My interests then turned to: I want to be in control of the situation, sexually.”

He claimed that the sexual abuse he endured as a young boy “set a dangerous precedent in my life”, leading to his sexual interests being about being in control.

After the initial allegation controversy, Hammer quit his starring role opposite Jennifer Lopez in the comedy film Shotgun Wedding, and was replaced by Miles Teller in the TV series The Offer, a drama about the making of The Godfather.

“My financial status is that I’m not just broke, I’m in huge debt,” he said.

Hammer said that after being “completely canceled and excluded”, he attempted to take his own life in February 2021 while quarantined in the Cayman Islands.

“I just walked into the ocean and swam as far as I could and hoped I drowned, or got hit by a boat, or got eaten by a shark.

“That’s when I realized my kids were still ashore and I couldn’t do that to my kids.”

Last summer, Hammer explored the possibility of selling timeshares in the Cayman Islands, visited the office of a resort where his friend worked, and watched him pitch to clients.

He said: “Someone took a video of it, sent it to TMZ and it exploded. In the end I was sucked into an immigration investigation because I didn’t have a work permit, even though I had no salary, I wasn’t making money, I wasn’t on the payroll.

“What can I do? It’s like you don’t want me to act, but then you won’t let me live a normal life either?

“Nobody wants to hire me. Nobody will insure me. I can’t commit to a project – nothing. And nobody will touch me, because if they hire me, they are the people who support abusers. And then they themselves are in danger of being canceled .”

Hammer said there is “no chance of redemption” in the “cancel-culture, wake-mob business” society we live in.

He added: “Someone makes a mistake and we throw them away like a broken disposable camera.”

In September, a three-part Discovery+ series titled House Of Hammer, produced by Hammer’s aunt Casey Hammer, featured on-camera interviews with two of Hammer’s alleged victims detailing some of their alleged abuses.

Hammer previously played the Winklevoss twins on The Social Network and starred opposite Timothee Chalamet in the critically acclaimed drama Call Me By Your Name.

He married American TV personality Elizabeth Chambers in May 2010 and the couple have two children.
