Detectives have launched a murder investigation after a 16-year-old girl was stabbed to death in a park.

Police are on the hunt for two people who were seen in Linear Park in Culcheth, Warrington, Cheshire, shortly before Brianna Ghey was found on a path there on Saturday afternoon.

Police describe the couple as a white man and woman, in their late teens or early twenties, both with dark curly hair.

An autopsy was performed by the Interior Ministry on Sunday to determine the cause of death.

Brianna suffered multiple stab wounds, Cheshire police said.

Police said emergency services were called at 3:13 p.m. Saturday by members of the public after she was found on a trail, and she was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after.

Police designated the area as a crime scene and cordoned it off while they combed the area for clues.

According to witnesses, the man wanted by police wore a longish, dark hooded coat, and the woman had a signature blanket-style red or purple-black plaid coat and a long flowing skirt, dress, or pants.

Detective Chief Superintendent Mike Evans said: “This is a truly horrible attack on a 16-year-old girl, who has sadly lost her very short life.

“We are appealing for any information that can help us find who did this to Brianna.

“We specifically want to speak to two people who were seen in the park where Brianna’s body was found and who have been described as a white man and woman, in their late teens or early twenties, both with dark curly hair.

“The man wore a long, dark hooded coat, and the woman had a signature red or purple-black blanket-style checkered coat and a long flowing skirt, dress, or pants.

“We would also like to speak to anyone who was in the park from approximately 1:30pm to 4pm yesterday or anyone who saw Brianna in the hours leading up to her death.

“We would ask people and businesses in the local community to check any CCTV or dashcam footage for anything that could help our investigation.

“I want to reassure the local community that we are working hard to find those responsible for Brianna’s death and that we have additional officers in and around Culcheth supporting the investigation.

“We also have agents supporting Brianna’s family during this truly tragic time.”

Following local rumors blaming an escapee from a nearby prison, the Justice Department has released the Manchester evening news there have been no recent escapes.

Detective Superintendent Adam Waller said police are pursuing numerous lines of investigation, but they did not believe there was a greater threat to the public.

He said: “I understand the concerns this incident is likely to cause, and I am aware of the rumor going around online. However, I would urge people not to speculate.”

He urged anyone with any information, however small, to contact the police.
