While most love Genshin effect for gameplay or story, others love it as the colorful cast of characters interact and plant the seeds for a blossoming romance to swoon over!
This is for that part of the community. To celebrate Valentine’s Day, here are our picks for the best Genshin effect ships!
Jean and Diluc
Jean and Diluc’s ship was one of the first ships to sail Genshin effect, as both were prominent and interacted quite frequently during the Mondstadt Archon Quests. Theirs is a classic romantic trope, of two people who want to get closer but can’t due to tasks and responsibilities they have to prioritize.
The bond between Jean and Diluc also seems doomed. In Mondstadt’s early history, it was members of the Gunnhildr and Ragnvindr clans who helped Venti rebel against Decarabian and later overthrow the corrupt aristocracy.
As descendants of those clans, Jean and Diluc also eventually helped Venti restore Dvalin. Maybe it’s destined for them to end up together too. Perhaps when Mondstadt is truly free of all threats, they can finally put aside their duty and let their budding romance blossom?
Ningguang and Beidou
Two of the most powerful women in Liyue also make up the city’s main power couple.
Ningguang and Beidou are close and maintain a friendly rivalry, even though their personalities and positions would normally oppose each other in Liyue society.
Since Beidou is a pirate, Ningguang’s job as one of the Liyue Qixing is to bring in the first. However, what actually happens is that Ningguang gets Beidou to run errands for her in exchange for ignoring her illegal activities.
The pirate captain also gets special privileges from that deal, such as unlimited access to the Jade Chamber so they can play chess, Beidou says.
At various events, we are treated to more bits and pieces about the relationship between Ningguang and Beidou. For example, in “Of Drink A-Dreaming”, Ningguang invited Beidou on an impromptu vacation and ended up in the Angel’s Share bar in Mondstadt, where the Traveler served them drinks while they teased each other.
Of course, what really fueled the fire for this ship was the animated cutscene for last year’s Lantern Rite, where Beidou complimented Ningguang’s new dress, the latter responding with, “Only a true treasure attracts Captain Beidou’s attention. It seems out that I have struck gold at this one.”
Beidou’s birthday is also on February 14, so the captain and the Tianquan have two things to celebrate on Valentine’s Day.
Xingqiu and Chongyun
Fans of the Xingqiu and Chongyun ship will get plenty to eat as the combination has numerous interactions during various events.
The two have a very close friendship, with Xingqiu endlessly teasing and playing pranks on the hapless Chongyun, who still considers him a true friend.
Chongyun’s voiceover lines express his admiration for Xingqiu and his dedication to chivalry and passion for reading. Of course, he is well aware of his friend’s mean side as he is always the victim of his pranks.
On the other hand, Xingqiu’s voiceover lines say that he and Chongyun understand each other very well and they have been friends for a long time.
The version 2.1 Flavors of the World cutscene even shows Xingqiu and Chongyun playing together as kids alongside their larger group of friends that also includes Xiangling, Hu Tao, and Xinyan (Yun Jin is also part of the group, yet to be released on time).
But while the relationship between Xingqiu and Chongyun seems to be your typical buddy-buddy friendship, the former is known to have shown clear signs of affection.
In Chongyun’s Hangout Quest, he told the Traveler that Xingqiu gave him many clues, including a popular dating spot where “two good friends” should go.
During the Moonchase Festival, Xingqiu invited Chongyun to a Feiyun Commerce Guild warehouse and asked him to read a book to him. The book is a romantic novel called “Young and Hopelessly Smitten”.
Those are some very big hints pointing to Xingqiu’s affection for Chongyun. But knowing the two, those clues just fly over Chongyun’s head or are dismissed by his friend as another prank.
Eula and Amber
Eula and Amber’s pairing is one of the most popular and healthiest in the game, gaining huge popularity when Eula’s character demo ended when she invited Amber to dance.
That said, their relationship goes much deeper than that brief (but sweet!) interaction.
If you look at their character stories, you will see that Eula and Amber have been friends for a long time.
In Eula’s vision story, it was revealed that she came under the tutelage of “a long-forgotten old outrider”, who many believe is Amber’s grandfather. We can then assume that Eula and Amber’s friendship started because of that connection.
Amber ended up being the only person in Mondstadt who completely trusted Eula, as the former didn’t let the latter’s family history get in the way of their friendship.
In any case, Amber has long defended Eula’s cause and helped the inhabitants of Mondstadt that Eula was far from the cruel Lawrence clan.
Eula’s character stories tell of how Amber helped Eula make her debut with the Knights of Favonius, even announcing her good friend’s deeds to anyone who would listen. Amber’s actions helped improve Eula’s standing with the populace, who were no longer as aggressive towards her as before.
We can see how much Eula cherishes Amber in the “Shadows Amidst Snowstorms” event, where the former was noticeably very protective of the latter as they were stranded in Dragonspine.
When the party was hit by an avalanche, Eula was quick to pull Amber away from danger in a hug. Here’s a nice compilation of all the Eula and Amber moments from that event, enjoy!
Traveler and Ayaka
Let’s face it, the Traveler is sent with almost everyone in the game because he’s the main character, so they’d end up getting a submission.
And while there are so many Traveler ships we can go with, the ongoing “Warrior’s Spirit” event asks us to highlight the Traveler x Ayaka ship.
While not directly named, there is always at least one character per region that is set up to be a love interest for the Voyager. In Inazuma’s case, it was Kamisato Ayaka.
The Traveler means a lot to Ayaka, who sees them as their first true friend, someone whose friendship she earned of her own accord and not her status as the highborn daughter of the Kamisato clan.
In her Story Quest, the Traveler also helped Ayaka discover a whole new side of her late mother’s personality and relatively enjoy her first festival as a regular visitor.
Although she often behaves with dignity, Ayaka is not afraid to show her affection towards the Traveler, even if she doesn’t say it directly. At the end of her Story Quest, she even performs a special dance for them (wearing wet socks!).
But Ayaka was at her most aggressive during the Warrior’s Spirit event, where she invited the Traveler to a few sparring sessions and playfully told them, “Make sure you take good care of your sword. If I ever manage to get it one day, to steal will also be in my hands.”
Say what you will about Ayaka, but of all the other characters the Traveler is sent with, she’s one of the few who actively tries to get things done.
Honorable Mention: Vlad and Nadia
While our list was full of ships between playable characters, there are also some fun NPC combinations in the game that would also make us swoon. Of them all, the combination of Vlad and Nadia is perhaps the best.
The two are members of the Fatui and work as security guards for the Northland Bank, with Vlad working the day shift while Nadia covers the night shift.
Their relationship blossomed when Nadia accidentally left a letter for her brother at the bank while changing shifts. Vlad, mistaking it for a letter written for him, left a reply. The two became pen pals because of this and wrote letters for the other to read during their shifts.
Both Vlad and Nadia become very homesick during their stay in Liyue, with the former asking for a transfer back to Snezhnaya, while the latter waits at the harbor every day for a boat carrying letters from her family.
Once they became pen pals, they would find comfort in each other’s letters, though they couldn’t meet because they were on different shifts.
Vlad and Nadia would finally meet at the very first Lantern Rite Festival in version 1.3, and players have been looking forward to seeing them together in every iteration of the event ever since.
In this year’s Lantern Rite, the couple attended the music festival and had a great time together, with Nadia even curtly saying it was a great experience because of the person she came with.
We can’t wait for the next Lantern Rite to see how Vlad and Nadia’s relationship will blossom!
